978,311. Screw-and-nut gearing. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Jan. 20, 1961 [Jan. 29, 1960], No. 2458/61. Heading F2Q. A metal-reinforced plastics screw or nut shown as a car jack spindle comprises a metal tube 1 having ridges or recesses 2 to key a screw-threaded plastics part 3 which is either moulded thereon, or formed separately and pushed on. The tube 1 is formed from welded or soldered sheet metal. The jack spindle shown has at one end serrations 11 for an actuating lever or a bevel drive, and at the other end comprises a ball cup 6. A plastics collar 12 may be enlarged and corrugated, Fig. 4 (not shown), to provide a buffer. In a modification an internally-threaded plastics part is moulded within a hexagonal tube to form a nut, axial movement being prevented by bent-over tongues and/or transverse ridges.
