978,009. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1962 [Nov. 29, 1961], No. 40717/62. Heading B6B. A sheet conveyer comprises a chamber including a concave curved wall, a sheet exit slit in said wall communicating with an exit channel extending substantially tangentially to said wall, means for admitting sheets into said chamber, means for directing a gaseous fluid under pressure to flow over said wall so as to tend to maintain said sheets in close proximity with said wall and to convey said sheets along said wall and out through said exit slit. A loose assemblage of sheets 16 is contained in a hopper 15 closed by a door 52 pivoted at 53 and urged towards the closed position by a spring 54. The door is opened by means of a solenoid 55. The hopper opens into a chamber 10 comprising a flange member 12 closed by a transparent cover 13. Blades 44, carried by U-shaped wire frames 45, are mounted on a sleeve 42 secured to a shaft 40. The latter is rotated by belts 46, 50 and pulleys 47, 49 and 51. Pulleys 47, 49 are connected through a slip clutch 48. Air is blown into the chamber through inlets 20 positioned at a tangent to the peripheral wall 11 of the chamber to create a low-pressure high-velocity zone adjacent the wall, which together with the action of the blades conveys the sheets around the chamber and out of an exit 21. The sheets are fed along a guide 22 by a pair of spaced belts 25 passing around pulleys 27 at their lower ends. Said pulleys are mounted on a pivoted support 30 spring-biased against a stop 32. Double feed is prevented by rollers 34, 35 rotating in the same direction, the roller 34 rotating at a higher angular velocity and having a greater coefficient of friction with the sheets than the roller 35. The sheets are registered against a side wall 37 by a skewed roller 36 and fed by rollers 38. The belt 50 also drives a D.C. generator 57 coupled to the solenoid 55, so that as long as the blades rotate faster than a predetermined value, the door 52 will be held open to admit sheets into the chamber.
