Abstract
486,684. Machine guns. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Feb. 23, 1937, No. 5357. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to belt-fed machine guns in which the portion of the belt 1a, Fig. 1, entering the feed box of the gun 2 is relieved of strain, arising from the weight of the depending portion 1b of the belt leading to the belt box, by passing the belt over a power driven roller 3. According to the invention, the support, such as 7, of the roller is made yieldable under the belt tension to bring a power-driven friction wheel 10 into driving engagement with a friction wheel on the roller whereby the effort or velocity ratio of the power drive is varied to suit the belt tension. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 is such that, if the tension of the belt increases, the effort of the power drive is automatically increased and, as soon as slack is produced in the part 1a of the belt, the effort of the power drive automatically diminishes. In an alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 5, radial movement of the roller 3 in guides 19 under increased belt tension causes a disc 20 to move over a power driven friction wheel 21 to increase the velocity ratio of the drive.
