Abstract
1,150,222. Expanding-wheel gearing. J. R. FERRIDAY, and R. G. COLLIER. 22 March, 1966, No. 49058/68. Divided out of 1,150,221. Heading F2D. A V-belt transmission comprises driving and driven expanding pulleys 73, 75 which each have an axially fixed flange 78 and a movable flange 79, centrifugal weights 86 being connected by links 87 to the driving pulley flange 79 and to an axially fixed support 88 so that the effective diameter of the driving pulley is increased as the input speed rises. The driving pulley flange 79 is fast with a sleeve 81 acting, by way of a bearing, on a lever 83 which is linked with lever 85 which axially adjusts a shaft 76 fast with the driven pulley flange 79 so that the effective diameter of the driven pulley is decreased simultaneously with the increase in the driving pulley diameter. The lever 85 provides a mechanical advantage so that the movement of the driven pulley flange 79 is less than that of the driving pulley flange to compensate for the larger diameter of the driven pulley. The weights 86 are urged inwardly by springs to a position in which the driving pulley flanges are their maximum distance apart and the belt rides on a bearing 90.
