Abstract
1,029,964. Feeding sheets. PARNELL & SONS Ltd. April 1, 1963 [April 4, 1962], No. 12880/62. Heading B6B. In apparatus for separating sheets (or cords) from a stack 11, means to ensure that when two sheets are separated simultaneously the second sheet is retained and fed back towards the stack, comprises a fixed suction head 17 which grips the second sheet, and a reversely rotating suction drum 19, Fig. 2 (not shown), incorporated in the head 17 then returns this second sheet towards the stack. The stack 11 is in a magazine 10 resting on a conveyer belt 14 which urges the front face of the magazine towards a pair of belts 13, substantially as described in Specification 1,003,124. The belts 13 are toothed for engagement with pulleys 27, and are provided with longitudinally spaced perforations. Behind the belts at the top edge of the stack 11 are two suction shoes 15, whereby sheets are separated at predetermined intervals and fed upwardly past the suction head 17: the sheets are then fed to a sorting or reading mechanism by the belts 13 and idler rollers 26. The head 17 has a flat face 16 which is recessed centrally to accommodate the suction drum 19, and has suction perforations 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), on its face 16. The drum 19 is secured to a shaft 18 driven continuously by a belt drive in synchronism with the belt 13. A part of the drum is of larger radius than the rest and has the suction perforations therein, so that only this part of the drum projects beyond the face 16 to engage the second sheet separated. The drum and the face 16 are connected through valve ports 24, 25 to a vacuum source, and these can be adjusted relatively to each other and to the perforations in the belts 13 by a simple adjustment of the shaft 18 relative to the drum 19 and the pulley which drives the shaft. A nozzle 29 directs compressed air at right angles to the direction of sheet feed, and between the stack 11 and the head 17. In operation, when the foremost sheet 12 is lifted by the belts 13 to a position opposite the head 17, suction is applied through the valve ports 24, 25 to the perforations 23 in the face 16, so that any second sheet which may be adhering to the first sheet is held to the face 16: this second sheet is then gripped by the reversely rotating suction drum 19 and returned towards the stack 11. A centrifuged fan may provide both the source of vacuum and the compressed air for the apparatus.
