976,420. Electric resistance furnaces. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION Ltd. May 28, 1963 [May 29, 1962], No. 20618/62. Heading H5H. An electrically-heated soaking pit or furnace of the kind comprising a heating chamber and an electric heating element formed by a temperature-resistant container containing resistance material, has the container in the form of an inverted U-shaped tube 21 mounted vertically and having a tubular extension 30 from the open extending vertically through the roof of the soaking pit or furnace. Tube 21 comprises two legs 22 with an open portion 23. Extension 30 is closed with a cap 32. Tube 21, of silicon carbide, is filled with petroleum coke 29 and has an electrode 27 with an external terminal 28 in the bottom of each leg 22. Tube 21 and extension 30 are mounted in a chamber 19 roofed by wall 13, between and opening into two heating chambers for the ingots, or alternatively the heating element may be in a recess in the side of a heating chamber. Apertures 35 and 36 in the walls of the heating chamber one inlet and exhaust ports for other heating media for example the products of the combustion of oil fuel.
