966,236. Retort furnaces for treating refuse; hot-water boilers. W. MESCHKAT. June 26, 1961 [July 9, 1960; July 20, 1960], No. 23058/61. Headings F4A and F4B. Apparatus for carbonizing refuse comprises a water-jacketed carbonizing chamber 19 disposed around one or more cylindrical combustion chambers 3 with oil- or gas-burners 4, and a secondary combustion chamber 18 surrounded by a boiler space 14 and connected to chamber 19 by a flue 12. Chamber 19 has an air-tight charging lid 5, and char is deposited into an ashbox 6 by a rocking grate. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the water jacket of the boiler and the carbonizing chamber are connected, and the combustion chamber is extended upwards to form a further compartment 20 incorporating electric immersion heater coils 31. A pipe 21 with an end protecting grid 22 passes through the top part of the boiler carrying the gases straight from the refuse to the stack.
