A circular knitting machine has a plurality of parallel needle cylinders driven from a common driving means. The needle cylinders 1, 2, and welt 'dials 22, 23 are driven from a horizontal drive shaft 24 by way of shafts 8, 12, 13, 20, 21. A control drum 31 has part annular cams 32 which each co-operates with a follower 33 and a pin 34 to move flexible rods 37, 38 which control two corresponding mechanisms, e.g. cam box cams, one for each of the cylinders. The common drive shaft may be horizontally or vertically disposed and the cylinders arranged in line or with their axes lying on a circle.
