A flat warp knitting machine comprises a mechanism to drive the knitting elements which includes a pivoted member 16 which is ocsillated through an angle of between eighty and one hundred degrees by a rotating crank 10 acting through a connecting rod 15, the pivoted member being connected through a pivoted link 17 to a driving member 12 which carries the knitting elements, the link being arranged so that its line of action intersects the pivotal axis 36 of the pivoted member in the course of each cycle of movement. The connections between the pivoted member and the pivoted link and between the connecting rod and the crank are adiustable in position so that the form of the movement of the driving member can be varied. The needles, needle tongues, guide eyes and sinkers are each driven by a separate mechanism from a common crank-shaft.
