Abstract

975,816. Transistor pulse circuits. HEWLETT-PACKARD CO. March 8, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 8515/61. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H2] In a circuit for supplying pulses to a gas-discharge tube, the tappings on the transformer primary are first set to provide a high secondary voltage at the beginning of each pulse and, when the gas tube breaks down, the primary tappings are automatically adjusted to reduce the primary current. Fig. 1 shows a circuit for pulsing a microwave noise generator tube 41. Positive pulses from a source 11 are amplified by a transistor 13 and amplifier 15 before being fed to terminal 21 of transformer 25. The switching device 55 is normally closed so that the effective primary connections are terminals 21, 51. The secondary winding provides a 4,000V pulse which strikes the tube 41, thus giving an increase in primary current. The striking of tube 41 causes a positive pulse to appear at terminal 27 which renders diode 29 conductive, hence the effective primary connections are now terminals 21, 27, so that the primary current is reduced. Negative feedback from point 46 maintains constant current in tube 41 until the end of the pulse from source 11, when the switching device 55 is opened and tube 41 extinguished. Device 55 is reclosed, in readiness for the next pulse, by the decay of flux in an inter-stage transformer of amplifier 15. The negative feedback from point 46 is inoperative when the tube 41 is extinguished.
