Abstract

1, 085, 367. Ignition systems. TUNG-SOL ELECTRIC Inc. March 25, 1965 [April 14, 1964], No.12772/65. Heading F1B . An ignition system comprises a pair of breaker contacts 12, 13 connected in series with a source of direct current 10, a primary winding 16 of a first transformer connected in series with the breaker contacts and the source of direct current, an inductive winding 24 on a ferromagnetic core 25, a semi-conductor gate controlled switch 22 the anode and cathode of the gate controlled switch and the inductive winding being connected in series and connected across the source of direct current, a control circuit for the gate controlled switch connected between the positive terminal of the current source and the control electrode of the switch, the control circuit including a secondary winding 18 on the first transformer and a first diode rectifier 27 poled so as to block normal current flow from the source, a storage circuit for storing a quantity of electricity generated by the inductor when the magnetic flux in its core collapses, the storage circuit including a storage capacitor 35 connected in series with a second diode rectifier 36 and connected to a coupling circuit for discharging the capacitor when the switch is made conductive, and an output transformer 30 including a primary winding 34 and a secondary winding 31 the primary winding being coupled to the storage circuit and the secondary being connected to a distributer 15. In a modification (not shown) the winding 24 is replaced by a transformer and a separate silicon controlled rectifier is employed for discharging the storage capacitor through the output transformer. In this embodiment a delay control circuit is coupled between the storage capacitor and the trigger electrode of the silicon controlled rectifier. The delay control circuit may include a Zener diode and a four layer rectifier.
