Abstract

975,544. Welding by fusion. BUREAU D'ETUDES INDUSTRIELLES FERNAND COURTOY, and BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1962 [Oct. 13, 1961], No. 38527/62. Heading B3R. In welding thick-walled parts 1 of austenitic steel containing niobium or ferritic steel containing vanadium, the surfaces adjoining the weld seam are buttered before welding by applying a coating 2 of niobium-free or vanadium-free welding material to avoid cracks at the edges of the seam, the maximum thickness of the buttering coat being 2 mm. The weld seam 3 is of the same material as the buttering coat. The Specification refers to a buttering layer of an iron alloy containing 0.5-1.5 Mo and 0-3.5 Cr for use with vanadium containing steels and for use with 0.05-0.2 C, 0.1-1 Si, 0.1-1 Mu, 14-20 Cr, 8-20 Ni, 0-5 Mo and 0.1-1 Nb containing steel a buttering layer of the same or similar composition but without the Nb content.
