A lighting system for a vehicle comprises in combination the illumination of the road by light reflected from lamps placed in or under the body of the vehicle, the reduction of intensity of all non-obscured lamps to a low value and the illumination of the vehicle body by lamps of low intensity so placed as not to dazzle or interfere with the vision of the driver and to produce a floodlight effect which may be assisted by a fluorescent coating on the body of the vehicle.
