Heading F2J In a brake press comprising a fixed die 1 and a movable die 3, adapted to be reciprocated vertically in guides 13, 14 by the engagement of lugs 4, 5 thereon with eccentric devices 6, 7 keyed to a shaft 8, a movable safety shutter 14 is interconnected by means of a pivoted lever 25 with a cam 24 mounted on the shaft 8, whereby operation of the machine at the beginning and end of each cycle is prevented, except when the shutter is in a safe position, but movement of the shutter away from the safe position a predetermined time interval after the beginning of each cycle is allowed. The pivoted lever 25 has an arm 28 which projects through an aperture 29 in shutter 14 and it is formed with a face 27 which co-operates with a radial face 30 on the cam 24. Shaft 8 is driven from a motor 23 through gearing 17, shaft 16, clutch 19 and drive shaft 21 carrying a flywheel 22. After one revolution of shaft 8, clutch 19 is disengaged automatically and a brake 18 is applied.
