974,933. Bundling-machines. RYLANDS BROS. Ltd. July 20, 1962 [July 29, 1961], No. 27609/61. Heading B8C. In a machine for securing a tie about an article such as a coil of wire C, a guideway or groove 54 extending around driven hinged arms 10, 11 is open at one side so that tie wire W may be releasably retained by spring-mounted cover-plates 62, 63, wire from stock being fed by rollers 57, 58 to the free end of arm 10, while the arms close together around the coil C, and then through the remainder of the guideway, into a slot 36 in a twisting wheel 24, and into a gripper 22, 23 (Fig. 4); a chain 29 is clamped tightly about the coil C (Fig. 7), causing the gripper to hold the free end of the wire W, and the feed wheels 57, 58 reverse, pulling the wire from the guideway 55, 56 and tightly around the coil C, after which the wheel 24 rotates to twist the ends of the tie together, Fig. 7, a cutter 25 severing the tie from stock during the first twist, and the gripper releases the wire W. Several ties may be applied to each coil C by rotating it within the arms 10, 11, or by passing it along a conveyer to similar mechanisms having arms at different angles. The arms 10, 11 may be opened by contact of the coil with e.g. a pivoted arm.
