[Also in Division B2] A machine for converting to pulp paper of any kind including paperboards includes a tank beneath which are located two discharge chambers separated from the tank and from each other by perforated walls, there being mounted within the tank above one perforated wall a set of vanes on a shaft that also carries a second set of vanes rotatable in the upper discharge chamber. The vanes of the first set 7 are so rotated and shaped as to drive pulp liquor towards stationary vanes 24 that divert the liquor back towards the centre of the tank. The vanes 12 of the second set have a suction effect tending to draw liquor through the perforated wall 9, holes of which are tapered from inlet to exit ends and have sharp cutting entrance edges. The vanes 12 also act to scrape pulp from the bottom of the wall 9 as well as serving as a pump producing a head high enough to force the pulp to a greater height than the tank and to convey it to the next treatment machine. The lower surfaces of the vanes of the first set 7 are provided with rims along their leading lower surfaces to co-operate with the perforated wall 9 to chop and pulp the material. The shaft 6 carrying the two sets of vanes is mounted in a manner permitting vertical adjustment to compensate for wear of the rims. Valves 18, 19 are provided in ducts 16, 17 from which pulped material is discharged from chambers 11, 14 according to which valve is open, the chamber 14 only being used if a finer pulp is required. One or more sedimentation chambers 20 may be provided in which heavier impurities may collect. Heavy impurities are also collected in a cup 33 connected directly to the bottom of the tank.
