Abstract

974,020. Gas burners. SCOTTISH GAS BOARD, and BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 22, 1963 [Nov. 22, 1962; May 31, 1963], Nos. 44139/62 and 22029/63. Heading F4T. A gas burner comprises an outer block 1 and an inner block 2 defining between them an adjustable forwardly convergent annular fuel gas passage 3, and a plurality of openings 18 in the inner block 2 through which oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and air is discharged into the fuel gas. The outer block has a circular array of bleed passages 4 leading from the annular gas passage 3 to the front face of the block and adapted to discharge gas parallel to the axis of the burner. The outer block 1 is welded to a tube 6 having an inlet nozzle 32 for the fuel gas, and the inner block 2 is welded to a duct 12 having an inlet nozzle 17 for the oxygen or oxygen and air. The tube 6 is moved relative to the duct 12 by means of a nut 30 which is welded to the duet 12 and which is screwed on to the tube 6. The end of the annular space between the tube 6 and the duet 12 as sealed by a ring 28 lying in a recess in a further ring 27 secured to the tube 6. The outer block 1 is cooled by water supplied by a conduit 8 to the forward end of the annular space between the tube 6 and an outer tube 5 secured to the outer block 1; a water outlet 10 is formed in the rear end of the tube 5. An annular recess 11 is drilled in the rear face of the outer block to increase the cooling by the water. The inner block 2 is cooled by water supplied by a conduit 19 to the forward end of a tube 13 secured to the inner block 2; an escape opening 22 for the water is provided in the rear end of the tube 13. The rear face of the inner block has a cavity 14. The device shown in Fig. 2 is adapted to be secured to the inlet nozzle 17 and provides a mixture of oxygen and air; it comprises a nozzle 48 discharging oxygen into the bore of a member 42 and inducing air through openings 47 therein. The outlet end of the member 42 is spaced from a Venturi tube 40 adjustably secured by means of helical slits 45 and clamping screws to a sleeve 41 having openings 43 for the entry of air. The openings 47 in the member 42 are varied by means of a sleeve 46 fitted around the member 42 and held thereon by clamping screws and slits 45a.
