974,004. Semi-conductor devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 24, 1961, No. 18743/61. Heading H1K. The area of a PN junction on one surface of a semi-conductor device is reduced by encapsulating the device in an epoxy resin 5 (Fig. 1) grinding away part of it with the resin (Fig. 2) and electrolytically etching the exposed surface of the device so that selective attack reduces the junction area. The device, which may be of germanium, may be only partly covered with resin so that no grinding is necessary. The resin may also be removed by cutting. The process may be used for transistors.
