1,022,722. Semi-conductor lasers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. July 19, 1963, No. 28624/63. Heading H3B. A " coincident " condition is detected by a semi-conductor laser when a desired combination of electrical inputs is achieved. In Fig. 2, the threshold current of a laser 10 is exceeded when the bias current from a source 11 is augmented by current from either or both, as the case may be, of inputs 12, 13, to provide an OR-gate, or an AND-gate. Alternatively, there may be no bias current, the laser being activated by the simultaneous appearance of six inputs. In Fig. 3, the resistance of the bias circuit is decreased, to bring the bias current from a source 15, or sources, above the laser threshold, upon illumination of either or both, as the case may be, of photo-conductive devices 16, 17. The illumination may be from other lasers. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the laser threshold is exceeded when a photo-electric device 18 is illuminated by either (OR-gate) or both (AND-gate) of two sources.
