Abstract

Adherent metal coatings are produced on metal objects such as surfaces of iron, steel, copper, brass or aluminium, or on pretreated plastic surfaces, such as of acetyl cellulose, cellulose acetobutyrate, polyglycol-terephthalate or polyacrylonitrile foil, by contacting them with an aqueous solution of a salt of the metal to be applied, e.g. NiCl2, CoCl2, NiSO4, CoSO4, FeSO4 and/or ZnCl2, and as reducing agent at least one boron-nitrogen compound which carries 1-3 hydrogen atoms on the boron atom and at least one organic group on the nitrogen atom, i.e. N-alkyl-borazanes, -borazenes, -borazines and/or -borazoles, e.g. N,N1,N11-tri, N,N1-di or N-mono-methyl/ethyl-borazane, N-mono or N,N1-dimethyl-borazene, N-isopropyl-borazane/borazene/borazine, and/or N-trimethyl-borazole. The latter compounds are made water-soluble by a water-soluble alcohol or ether, e.g. methanol, ethanol, butanol, dioxan or diethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The plating bath may have a pH range of between 2 and 14 with a working temperature of between 20 and 100 DEG C. With an alkaline bath the metals are kept dissolved with complex formers such as ammonia, potassium sodium tartrate, sodium citrate or ethylene-diamine. Sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid or ammonium chloride may be added to the bath. For coating plastics the surfaces may be pretreated first in a bath containing NaOH, an alkyl sulphonate and water, then in a bath containing ZnCl2, HCl, an alkyl sulphonate and water, and finally in an aqueous solution of PdCl2 and HCl. The coatings produced can be reinforced electrolytically.
