Abstract
614,038. Electrodeposition of metals. UDYLITE CORPORATION. July 2, 1946, No. 19681. Convention date, July 9, 1945. [Class 41] A process of electrodepositing nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc, cadmium, copper or antimony includes electrolysing an aqueous acid solution of a slat of the metal to be deposited and a minor proportion of an addition agent consisting of a soluble sulphate of a water-soluble aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, the hydrogen of at least an hydroxy group of which is replaced by an alkyl radical containing from eight to eighteen carbon atoms, the sulphate group being linked directly to an hydroxy group of the aliphatic polyhydric alcohol. The preferred sulphates are polyethylene glycol alkyl ether sulphates represented by the formula where R is an alkyl radical containing from eight to eighteen carbon atoms, M is a cation such as hydrogen, an alkali metal or a metal corresponding to that of the metal being deposited, and n is a whole number preferably 2, 3 or 4. The addition agents are used in concentrations of from about .05 to .5 grams per litre of electrolyte solution. The solution may also contain an aryl sulphonic acid brightener or a brightener of the form of a soluble compound containing the group -SO2.N=. Examples are given of the composition of nickel, cobalt, copper, iron, zinc, cadmium and antimony baths, using as addition agent the sodium salt of mono-lauryl ether of ethylene glycol mono-sulphate. Specification 525,847 is referred to.
