Abstract

An aqueous, alkaline bath for nickel or cobalt plating of e.g copper, brass and iron surfaces, comprises a cobalt or nickel salt, e.g. the chloride or sulphate, boron hydride and a first complexing agent. A second complexing agent is added after each batch of plating or continually during operation. The first agent may be diethylene diamine or triamine triethylene tetramine and tetraethylene pentamine. The second agent may be ammonia or a water soluble amine which is volatile at 40-100 DEG C., e.g. methylamine, di- or tri-methylamine, ethylamine diethylamine, n-propylamine, isopropylamine, n- or iso-butylamine. In an example the bath comprises 30 g./l. nickel chloride, 40 g./l. sodium hydroxide, 60 g./l. ethylene diamine, 10 g./l. sodium fluoride, and 0.6 g./l. sodium borohydride, and the following is added at 40 m.l./h. during plating as an aqueous solution (grams/litre): 52.5 sodium borohydride, 117.5 sodium hydroxide, 4.0 lead acetate and also at 80 m.l./h. 157.0 g./l. nickel chloride and 500.0 g./l. ammonia conc. Specification 932,903 is referred to.
