Abstract

971,586. Removing dust and fume generated in industrial processes. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Jan. 22, 1963 [Jan. 23, 1962], No. 2756/63. Heading F4X. [Also in Division B1] Exhaust gases from an electric arc furnace 1 are withdrawn during periods of low gas evolution by a Venturi washer 4 alone, and during periods of high gas evolution by the washer and a fan 15 downstream thereof. The fan 15 is located in a by-pass duct 12 connected to a duct 9 leading from the washer 4 to a stack 13 and during low gas evolution dampers 10 and 11 in duct 12 are closed and a damper 14 in duct 9 is open. As the volume of gas increases the damper 14 is closed and dampers 10 and 11 are opened. Sludge collecting in the lower part 7 of the washer 4 is removed through a valved outlet 8. An electrostatic precipitator having a fan may be interposed between the washer and fan, the precipitator fan being shut down during the period of low gas evolution.
