Abstract
970,999. Flash distillation apparatus ; distilling water. AQUA-CHEM Inc. June 14, 1961 [June 20, 1960], No. 21451/61. Heading BIB. In an apparatus for distilling water comprising a horizontal cylindrical shell 11 divided by partitions 18 into several flash chambers through which the preheated water flows in series, and a bundle of condenser tubes 25 extending throughout the length of the upper part of the shell, the tube bundle, the partitions 18, the end-walls 14, 15 of the shell, and the distillate-trough 48 all form part of an assembly which can be readily removed from the shell. The condenser tubes pass through an opening in each partition 18, and are supported by a rubber sheet 28. The partitions are bolted to resilient annular seals 31 connected to the inner wall of the shell 11. The end-walls 14, 15 are bolted to flanges 37, extending round each end of the shell, by means of gaskets 40. The evaporator is vented by means of openings 29 in the partitions, and an opening 50 in endwall 14. The preheated water-to-be-distilled is introduced into the first flash chamber through inlet 19. After passing through each chamber in succession, the concentrated brine is discharged through outlet 20. Each chamber contains a perforated plate 21 for controlling the flow of the brine. A portion of the brine evporates in each chamber. The steam passes through a wire entrainment-separator 24, and is condensed on tube bundle 25 through which cooling water is circulated via boxes 44. The distilled water is collected in trough 48, and is withdrawn through outlets 46.
