Abstract

1373754 Surface condensers HITACHI Ltd 6 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 10830/73 Heading F4S In a surface condenser comprising a shell 10 divided into two chambers 11 and 12 operating at different pressures by a partition 15 through which a plurality of liquid coolant-carrying tubes 13 extend, sealing between the tubes 13, 13A and the holes 30, 30A in the partition through which they extend is effected by condensate flowing along the surface of the tubes in chamber 12, the tubes being inclined downwardly towards chamber 11. Annular grooves 39, 39A are formed in the holes to improve the sealing effect. In use chamber 11 is supplied with low pressure steam discharged from a turbine via a line 21 whereas chamber 12 is supplied with high pressure turbine discharge steam via a line 22. The tubes 13, which extend between inlet and outlet headers 30 and 32, are supported at regular intervals by support plates 14. Condensate collected at the bottom of chamber 11 in a tray 16 is passed via a pipe 17 into a perforated tray 18 at the bottom of chamber 12; the condensate leaving tray 18 via the perforations is then stored in a reservoir 25 at the bottom of the condenser.
