Abstract

Heat exchangers used top preheat esp. sugar syrup first with low-pressure steam (e.g. from an evaporator) and then with high pressure steam, are replaced by a single vertical tube, in-shell heat exchanger, with a vertical partition dividing two shell compartments. Lig. is fed to an input head, flows down through tubes surrounded by low pressure steam, and then up through tubes surrounded by high pressure steam to outlet head, the heads being divided by an extension upwards of the partition which divides the shell. Steam condensate outlets are provided at base, and residual vapour outlets at top, of each shell compartment.
