Abstract

1,051,622. Flash-type evaporators; distillation of water. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 15, 1965 [March 23.1964], No. 12181/64. Heading BIB. In a flash evaporator divided into a series of horizontally-adjoining units 10 by vertical partitions 11, each unit comprises an evaporator chamber surrounded by a condenser chamber, the two chambers being formed by inner and outer cylindrical walls 13, 12, respectively, which extend horizontally between the partitions. The inner wall 13 is provided with an opening 14 through which the vapour passes from the evaporator chamber into the condenser chamber and condenses on coils 30, which are supplied with cooling- medium from manifold 28. Heated liquid, e.g. brine, is introduced through pipe 36 into the evaporator chamber of the next unit. The rises between deflectors 17, 18, and partially vaporizes. The mixture of vapour and liquid strikes baffle 19. The vapours flows upwards to opening 14, and the liquid collects at the bottom of the evaporator chamber and flows through an opening 16 in partition 11 into the evaporator chamber of the next unit. The condensate collecting in the bottom of the condenser chambers flows through openings 38 in partitions 11, and is withdrawn from the apparatus through pipe 40. The units may be made of cast aluminium with aluminium tubes 30. The units may also be made of plastic with metal condenser tubes. The apparatus may be operated under vacuum. A modified apparatus is described wherein the wall 12, 13 each have a flat base.
