Abstract
1,185,824. Evaporators, flash type; desalination of water. WEIR WESTGARTH Ltd. 28 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 13139/66. Heading BIB. Desalinated water is produced from brine (e.g. sea water) by passing the heated brine upwards through a tower 1, divided by horizontal plates 2 into stages connected by riser pipes 3, wherein flash vaporization of water into steam takes place in each of the successive stages, withdrawing the steam from the stages through separate conduits 5 leading to separate condenser sections, and withdrawing residual brine from the upper part of the tower through conduit 7. Vacuum is applied to the top of the tower by line 8 so that the pressure at the top is about 1 p.s.i.a. As shown, there are two condensers 9, 10 connected to vacuum line 13. Each condenser is divided into sections by partitions 15 which do not make completely steam-proof with thewalls and cooling tubes 12 of the condensers, so that the degree of vacuum decreases from the right-hand or cool end of condenser 10 to the left-hand or hot end of condenser 9. The condensate formed in condenser 9 is collected in troughs 16 and conveyed by conduit 17 to the troughs 18 in condenser 10, from which the required fresh water product is withdrawn by conduit 19. Brine is introduced into the tubes of condenser 10, and the slightly warmed brine flowing out of the outlet header 11 is divided into two parts, one of which is discharged to waste through conduit 22. The other part is mixed with some of the residual brine from the top of the flash tower, and the mixture is passed through conduit 25 into the tubes of condenser 9. The brine leaving the other end of the tubes of condenser 9 is passed through steam-heater 27 and then introduced into the base of tower 1 through conduit 6.
