Apparatus for emptying refuse bins of different sizes comprises a bin pivoting arm 7 actuated by a tilting device 8 and a front plate 3, shutter 1 and closure flap 5 pivoted together at 2. The plate 3 has an aperture for the larger bins which is partly covered by the shutter 1 to provide an aperture suitable for smaller bins 12. A double-acting locking device 4 secures the shutter 1 either to the flap 5 or the plate 3. In use with a large bin hooks 6 are engaged by the bin and a lid projection is taken up by a crossbar 11, Fig. 1, of the lock 4 so that upon operation of the arm 7 the lid, shutter 1 and cover 5 swing together about 2 as the refuse is empted. With a small bin 12, hooks 16 and a claw 22 are engaged and the locking device 4 is manually engaged by a bar 13, Fig. 1, with the plate 3 so that upon swinging of the arm 7 the shutter 1 remains locked to the plate 3 while engagement of a lid projection 17 with a device 18 opens the lid as the cover 5 swings about 2. In a modification, Fig. 4, the lock 4 is biased by a spring 26 to engage the flap 5 in which position it remains during the emptying of a large bin which comes to rest against the plate 3 with the arm 7 at an angle α thereto. When a small bin is in use the arm 7 comes nearer the plate 3 before the latter is engaged by the bin so that a buffer 21 engages a plate 28 and through a lever 27 moves the lock 4 against the spring 26 to engage the plate 3.
