Abstract

1,191,525. Latches; multiple fastenings. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 31 July, 1967 [19 Sept., 1966], No. 35059/67. Heading E2A. A latch for use in a tail-door for an estate car which can be opened by an outside handle to swing about a vertical axis along its lefthand edge or by an inside handle to drop about a horizontal axis along its bottom edge as a tail-gate, can be released by operation of either handle, an interlock being provided to prevent operation of either handle after the other handle has been operated until the door is latched again. The latch is arranged at the top of the right-hand edge of the door which also has on its left-hand edge an upper latch released by operation of the inside handle only and on its right-hand edge a lower latch, which is released by operation of the outside handle only. A further mechanism may be provided to prevent release of any of the latches unless a window in the tail-door is wound down to a fully-retracted position. The upper right-hand latch has a bifurcated pivoted bolt 26, 27, Fig. 2, urged clockwise to a releasing position by a spring 33 but retainable in latching position by a detent 38 which engages a step in a plate 29 secured to the bolt. The outside handle acts on the end 62 of an actuator lever 58 coupled by a compression spring 71 to a lever 59 which rocks the detent through an extension 67. A rod 83 connected to the lever 59 releases the lower right-hand latch at the same time. Operation of the inside handle acts, in a manner not disclosed, to release the upper left-hand latch and also, through a rod 72, Fig. 3, to rock a lever 74, an arm 79 of which raises the end 45 of the detent 38 to release the upper right-hand latch. The lever 74 has pivoted to it a push rod 76 which cooperates with the end 65 of the lever 59, Fig. 2, to prevent simultaneous operation of the mechanisms actuated by the two handles. Operation of the outside handle while the inner one is operated merely results in the separation of the two levers 58 and 59. The detent 38 is held in a clockwise position after the release of 'the upper right-hand latch by the periphery 32 of the plate 29, and its end 45 cooperates with a hooked end 81 of the arm 79 to provide a further interlock which remains effective until the door is shut once more. When the taildoor window referred to above is lowered, it depresses a rod 55 to rock a lever 48 so that its hooked end 54 is moved from blocking relationship with the end 45 of the detent 38.
