Abstract
A container 6 receiving radio-active material and intended for reception in a removable cup 40 disposed at the foot of a well 42 in a shielding transport flask, has its mouth 10 defined by a frusto-conical surface, sealed by an 0-ring seal 28 carried by a plug 16. The plug 16 is hinged to the container 6 by a pin 14 passing through a fork 12 on the container and a flange 18 in the plug, and is held in the closed position, Fig. 1, by an over-centre toggle mechanism comprising a latch plate 30 and a resilient catch 32. The plate 30 is hinged at 34 to the plug 16 and the catch 32, formed by piano wire bent into inverted U-shape, is secured to the container. A handling rod 36 carrying a plate 38 is attached to the plate 30, this plate 38 being adjacent a closure member 46 for the well 42 to prevent opening of the plug 16 when the container 6 is disposed in the shielding flask. To open the container the rod 36 is first moved in the direction f 1 , whereupon the plug 16 attains the position shown in Fig. 3, the rod then being moved in the direction f 2 to release the recess 35 in the plate 30 from the catch 32 (Fig. 4, not shown).
