Abstract

970,038. Couplings; cable and wire terminals; two-part couplings. R. NOIR. Sept. 9, 1963 [Sept. 10, 1962], No. 35532/62. Heading H2E. A connector to a cable from a battery terminal post comprises a split skirt 2, having a screw-threaded extension 6, which engages an insulating wing-nut 12, which transmits pressure through lug 17 gripping a tapered cup 10, formed from sheet steel coated with copper, cadmium or lead, which forces the bent ends 5 of each tongue 4 into engagement with terminal 1. Plate 17, having an extension 16 fitting over the frustoconical shaped lower part of the wing nut 12, has an extension through which cable 18 is passed and held in position by screw 19. The terminal 1, skirt 2, and tapered cup 10, are surrounded by an insulating cup 21, containing petroleum jelly which is forced in through the screw-threaded extension of the skirt which is hollow. A temporary connection may be made by inserting plug 25 into the top of hollow extension 6. When the wing nut 12 is unscrewed contact is broken between the terminal 1 and cable 17, but there may still be contact between terminal 1 and plug 25.
