969,756. Shoe insoles; shank stiffeners. L. A. LOAKES, and F. D. ABBOTT. Dec. 21, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 32463/60. Heading A3B. A composite shoe insole construction comprises an insole proper having one face recessed at 12 to accommodate a shank stiffener 13 and a groove 15 formed at the bottom of the recess to receive a strengthening rib 14. The waist and heel portion 10 of the insole may be of fibre board, or of two thicknesses of material, one receiving the rib 14, the other embracing the stiffener. Alternatively the part 10 may be moulded in one piece from a plastic. The stiffener may be held in place by adhesive and may be covered by a sheet 16 of canvas. The forepart of the insole may comprise a highly flexible rearward portion 17, attached by a scarf joint to a less flexible toe-end portion 18.
