Abstract
969,669. Mechanical switches, without quickaction. E. W. PARRISH. Jan. 23, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10240/62. Heading H2B. An electric switch, preferably for isolating the battery from the electrical system of a vehicle carrying petrol &c., comprises at least two pairs of stationary contacts 1, 2, biased by springs 4 located in insulating pads 5 and a contact barrel 10 of insulating material with contact strips 12 on two faces. Initially the pairs of contacts 1, 2 are bridged by the contact strips 12, but on rotation of the barrel 10, the pairs of contacts 1, 2 and strips 12 are isolated. Terminals 7 of the contacts are aligned with holes 14 either in the base or sides of the casing. An earth testing contact 15 is provided for engagement with the contact 2 so that contact is broken when the barrel is rotated, thus indicating a fault by means of the vehicle's components. In another embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), the contact 15 is replaced by a forked blade contact movable by an insulating member, located between the switch contact and biasing spring, when the barrel is rotated. The barrel 10 may also be modified to have one or more contact studs extending through the barrel between the sides without the strips 12 so that the switch may be connected as a doublepole circuit breaker, Fig. 5 (not shown), may connect two batteries in parallel or series, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), may be a reversing switch, Fig. 8 (not shown), or a change-over switch, Fig. 9 (not shown).
