Abstract

The invention comprises optical brightening agents of the formula <FORM:0969402/C1/1> wherein M represents hydrogen or a cation (e.g. ammonium and alkali metals), X represents a phenyl radical which may be substituted, e.g. by alkyl, alkoxy, halogens, carboxylic acid amide groups, sulphonic acid amide groups, nitrile groups or alkylsulphonyl groups, and Y represents hydrogen, C1- 4 alkyl or C1- 4 hydroxyalkyl. The above compounds are prepared by reacting in any order one mole of 4,41-diamino-stilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid or a salt thereof with two moles of cyanuric chloride and two moles of a primary amine of the formula <FORM:0969402/C1/2> in the presence of an acid binding agent. b -Hydroxy -a - phenyl-ethylamine is prepared by reacting styrene oxide with ammonia.ALSO:Wool, silk and synthetic polyamides and polyurethanes are brightened by treatment with compounds of the formula:- <FORM:0969402/D1-D2/1> wherein M represents hydrogen or a cation (e.g. ammonium and alkali metals), X represents a phenyl radical which may be substituted, e.g. by alkyl, alkoxy, halogens, carboxylic acid amide groups, sulphonic acid amide groups, nitrile groups or alkylsulphonyl groups, and Y represents hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 hydroxyalkyl, in the presence of ammonium sulphate, formic acid and sodium hydrosulphite, using aqueous media. The polyamide fibres may also be treated in a foulard and fixed in a steamer. Fibres may also be pre-bleached with hydrogen peroxide or pre-treated with a washing liquor containing trisodium phosphate and nonylphenol.
