Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0944263/C2/1> where each of A and B is independently an ethylene or propylene radical, R is a hydrocarbon radical (alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl) which may be substituted (e.g. alkoxyphenyl, halophenyl), n is 0 or 1, and X is hydrogen, sulphonic acid, or an alkyl or alkoxy radical having one or two carbon atoms; metal salts thereof; and their production by reacting 2 moles of cyanuric chloride with one mole of the appropriate diamino-stilbene compound and 2 moles of R(OB)nOANH2 in the presence of an acidbinding agent, e.g. sodium acetate or carbonate. The compounds of the above formula are brightening agents (see Division D1).ALSO:Organic materials, such as natural and synthetic polyamides, including wool, and cellulosic materials, including cotton, are optically brightened by treatment, e.g. from neutral or mildly acid or aqueous solution, with a compound of formula <FORM:0944263/D1-D2/1> where each of A and B is independently an ethylene or propylene radical, R is a hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted, n is 0 or 1, and x is hydrogen, sulphonic acid, or an alkyl or alkoxy group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms, or a metal salt thereof (see Division C2). The brightening agents may be applied together with resin precondensates conferring anticrease properties, e.g. dimethylol ethylene urea.
