Abstract

A bleaching composition comprises from 0,001% to 1,0% by weight of a compound of the formula:- <FORM:0872553/IV(c)/1> where R and R1 are carbocyclic aromatic radicals, Y is H or NaSO3 and at least one of R and R1 contains a sulphonic radical when Y is H, the composition having from 2-10% available chlorine derived from a compound which generates a hypochlorite ion in water. The latter compound may be provided by a mixture of calcium hypochlorite, trisodium phosphate or soap or detergent and Glauber's salt or similar compositions comprising dichlorodimethyl hydantoin, N-sodium-N-chloroparatoluene sulphonamide or trichloroisocyanuric acid. In example (1), cotton muslin is bleached with a composition containing a compound of the formula:- <FORM:0872553/IV(c)/2> calcium hypochlorite and sodium sulphate, which is admixed in aqueous solution with sodium alkylaryl sulphonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium silicate, sodium sulphate and sodium chloride. In other examples, the radicals R and R1 of the specified compound, which is included in similar compositions, are:- <FORM:0872553/IV(c)/3> and when Y is H, R being:- <FORM:0872553/IV(c)/4> Specifications 684,842 and 696,038 are referred to.ALSO:A bleaching composition comprises from 0.001% to 1.0% by weight of a compound of the formula <FORM:0872553/III/1> where R and R1 are carbocyclic aromatic radicals, Y is H or NaSO3 and at least one of R and R1 contains a sulphonic radical when Y is H, the composition having from 2 to 10% available chlorine derived from a compound which generates a hypochlorite ion in water. The latter compound may be provided by a mixture of calcium hypochlorite, trisodium phosphate or soap or detergent and Glauber's salt or similar compositions comprising dichlorodimethyl hydantoin, N-sodium-N-chloroparatoluene sulphonamide or trichloro-isocyanuric acid. In Example (1), cotton muslin is bleached with a composition containing a compound of the formula <FORM:0872553/III/2> calcium hypochlorite and sodium sulphate, which is admixed in aqueous solution with sodium alkylaryl sulphonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium silicate, sodium sulphate and sodium chloride. In other examples, the radicals R and R1 of the specified compound, which is included in similar compositions, are: <FORM:0872553/III/3> and when Y is H, R being <FORM:0872553/III/4> Specifications 684,842 and 696,038 are referred to.
