[Also in Divisions G1 and G3] The response time of a bimetallic switch is improved by using a high heating current and a local fan for cooling the strip. As shown for controlling the gas pressure in a conduit, a bimetallic strip 7 (Fig. 1), which is subjected to intermittent heating through a circuit 13 including contacts which are operated at a controlled rate, is enclosed in an open-ended tube 8 and subjected to cooling by a fan 18. The strip 7 is attached to a wider strip 6 secured to the interior of the tube 8, which compensates for variations in ambient temperature. In another embodiment for measuring fluid pressure, a diaphragm 24 (Fig. 4) is subjected to the pressure on one side and carries a rod 25 terminating in a contact 26 on the other side, the contact co-operating with a further contact 27 carried by the bimetallic strip 7 to close a heating circuit for the strip, whereby the contacts 26, 27 make and break at a rate determined by the pressure behind the diaphragm 24, and represented by the average current in the heater circuit, as indicated by a meter.
