A vending machine has a number of article delivery drawers 18, control shafts 22 rotatable or displaceable by the initial movement of a drawer when the insertion of appropriate coinage has released members 30 on the ends of the shaft and rotatable or displaceable change release shafts 24 operated by the drawer and selectively coupled to change release actuating members 32. The change release shafts may be operated towards the end of the opening movement of the drawer or even during the return movement. A setting rod 46 is provided for each drawer and is fitted with pins 65 which engage levers on one of the control shafts and on one or more, as required, of the change release shafts 24. When a rod is raised by a cam surface 58 on a lever 38, 40 rotated by the corresponding drawer, the shafts 22, 24 are rotated and, towards the end of the drawer movement, a projection 72 on the lever moves a driving rail 68 to the right. The driving rail rotates a shaft 74 which is common to all the drawers and has fixed to it an apertured plate 86. The change actuating release members 32 are swingably mounted on the shaft 74 and carry spring- loaded coupling levers 96 which can pass through the apertures and notches 90 in the plate 86 but, if pivoted by one or more of the actuated shafts 24, engage the plate between the notches and so cause one or more change delivery devices to be operated. The plate 86 may be displaceable instead of being swingable.
