[Class 27.] The articles are stored in compartments of rotary drums T, Fig. 1, arranged above one another on a vertical shaft 3 driven by an electric motor E. The drums are rotated by the shaft through friction drives F, H but rotation is normally prevented by locking devices. When the articles of a particular drum are selected for delivery, a coin is inserted in a slot 40 and a press-key t corresponding to that drum is pressed in to release the drum, which is then rotated through the space of one compartment. The pressing in of one key t locks the others, in known manner, by blocks K sliding in a vertical tube n, the space between the blocks and the tube being just sufficient to allow the passage of the stem of one key at a time. The key t through a rod 22 actuates a lever 19, a nose 21 on which lifts a latch 10, Fig. 5, to release a double-armed escapement lever 9 controlled by a spring S. The ends 12, 15 of the lever 9 coact with dependent pins a on the drum normally to prevent its rotation in either direction. When the latch 10 is released, the spring S pulls the lever 9 so that the end 12 releases the pin a1, Fig. 5, and moves a switch arm 13 against a contact 14 to start the motor E. When the drum has rotated in the direction of the arrow through the space of one compartment, the pin a next after the pin a2 engages the cam end 15 of the lever 9 to restore this to locking position, thereby opening the switch to stop the motor. This releases a lever 29, pivoted at 31, which is then pulled by a spring 37 so that a catch 28, pivoted on the lever, is moved from under the bottom block K23 of the column of blocks K in the tube n, and allows sufficient movement of the blocks to permit the passage of one key stem. A lug 24 on the block K23 engages an extension 41 of the lever 29 to return the lever to locked position. After release of the pressed-in key, the catch 28 again locks the column of blocks.
