Abstract
652,446. Accounting-machines. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 22, 1948, No. 16706. Convention date, Feb. 12. [Class 106 (i)] An accounting or similar calculating machine, provided with auxiliary mechanism by which its keys can be automatically actuated for entering data, such as previous balances, from record cards or tapes, has individual selecting devices on its keys selectively positionable under control of the recorded data for co-operation with a key-actuating member. Automatic actuation of the keys occurs during an auxiliary cycle which is then followed by a normal cycle for entering on the totalizers the amounts setup. Depression of a machine release key 219 initiates a normal cycle for entering amounts which have been manually set, whilst depression of a balance pick-up key 71 or an overdraft pick-up key 72 initiates an auxiliary cycle followed by a normal cycle for making an automatic entry. The machine shown is generally similar to those described in Specifications 442,771, 443,977 and 447,481. Amount keys 271 control the movement imparted to differential actuators 352 by driving segments 364, the stem of the key depressed disengaging the actuator from its segment and holding it after an appropriate movement which is transmitted to totalizers 397, 398 and 399. Transverse camming pins 273 on the key stems in each order co-operate with a detent bar 275, and also actuate a control bar 274 for releasing a zero stop pawl 283 from the reset spider 351 of the differential actuator 352. Automatic key selection and actuation. Each of the amount keys 271 is associated with a selector magnet 306 adapted, when energized, to thrust a coupling pin 302, slidable in a carrier 301 on the key, into a cam-slot in an actuating bar 216, the actuating bars for the several orders being linked to a key-actuating shaft 211, Figs. 1, 6 and 8. Contact means (not shown), coact with the inserted record card or tape and selectively energize the magnets 306 according to the data recorded so that the appropriate keys are coupled to the actuating bars 216 for actuation by the shaft 211. Normal cycle operation. The main camshaft 66, Fig. 1, for setting the differential actuators is driven by a motor through worm gearing 20, 21, Fig. 8, a one-revolution clutch 22, constructed as described in Specification 443,836, [Group XXIV], and gearing 28, 64 and 65. Depression of the machine release key 219, Fig. 7, cams a release bar 142 to rock a stop 148 clear of an arm 149 on a shaft 141 coupled to the machine release shaft 45, Fig. 8. Shafts 141 and 45 thereupon rock (clockwise, Fig. 7) under spring action so that a retaining member 44 on the shaft 45 frees a spring-loaded clutch controlling lever 41 which thereupon releases the clutch to drive the main cam-shaft 66 through one revolution, during which the differential actuators 352 are adjusted according to the amounts set manually on the keys. Auxiliary cycle operation. Depression of either the balance pick-up key 71 or the overdraft pick-up key 72, in addition to camming the release bar 142 to free the machine release shaft 45, also cams a bar 80 which closes switch contacts 84 to energize a solenoid 171, Fig. 6. The armature 172 of the solenoid draws a coupling pin 175 under an arm 179 fast with the machine release shaft 45 so that, as the latter rocks, its movement is transmitted to an arm 177 on an auxiliary release shaft 105. A retaining member 104 on this shaft 105, similar to that 44 on the shaft 45, releases a second or auxiliary onerevolution clutch 23, also driven by the motor and through which the auxiliary cycle is effected. Release of the main clutch 22 is prevented, at this stage, by a nose 182 of the arm 177 taking over control of the main clutch lever 41. The auxiliary clutch drives four intergeared wheels. One of these wheels 202 drives a cam-shaft 203 for operating circuit controlling contacts ; those indicated at 205 are for controlling the key selector magnet circuits. A second wheel 125 has a cam race 206 which, through a follower 208 and a link 209, rocks the key operating shaft 211 to drawin the selected keys. The wheel 124 has a pin 129 which, towards the end of the auxiliary cycle revolution, contacts a link 127 to restore the auxiliary-clutch controlling lever 98 to break the auxiliary drive. At the same time, a cam track 187 associated with the fourth wheel 184, through a follower arm 189, rocks the auxiliary shaft 105 back to restore the retaining arm 104 to secure the auxiliary clutch controlling lever 98 in the normal clutch release position. The nose 182 of the arm 177 is simultaneously withdrawn from the main clutch control lever 41, so that the main clutch immediately takes over the drive to effect a normal cycle operation for entering the amounts set automatically on the keys into the totalizers. Specification 280,828, [Class 100 (iv)], also is referred to.
