Abstract

937,146. Typewriters. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1961 [Aug. 25, 1960], No. 30793/61. Class 100 (4). [Also in Group VIII] In a machine for marking data on a record, e.g. for marking numbers on a cheque, and including marking members individually set by setting members, and a drive shaft which, after the marking members have been set, is moved through a forward and return stroke, to effect a marking cycle of the machine, a separate member is provided for marking a value designation, e.g. a dollar sign, immediately in front of the highest significant digit in the number being marked, so as to prevent the fraudulent insertion of additional digits, the sseparate member being variably positioned during the cycle according to the number of digits in the mark. The marks may be printed or may be punched in the record. As applied to the machine described in Specification 937,145, embodying a number of members 21 for rotating a number of type-wheels such as 64, from a rest position to a set position, and having included in the mechanism operated from the drive shaft 82 devices which restore the members 21 and the type-wheels to their rest positions after marking has been effected by the action of a platen 123, the type-wheels 64 . . . 68, Fig. 4, corresponding to the higher denominations of a number to be marked have recesses 102 which, in the rest position, are situated along the printing line. A marking member 94 carrying the value designation 101 is movable along the printing line and into the recesses 102, such movement being effected by a resilient lever 227 early in a printing cycle and before printing is effected and being limited by the abutment of the leading end of the member 94 against the already set typewheel corresponding to the digit of highest denomination in the number to be printed, so that the value designation is printed closely adjacent to that digit. The lever 227 is operated by a lever 233 pivoted at 236 and carrying a follower 226 bearing on a cam 214 freely rotatable on the drive shaft 82. A disc 211 fixed to the shaft 82 has two oppositely facing teeth 212, 213 engageable respectively by pawls 216, 217 pivoted on the cam 214 and biased towards the disc by a spring 220 connecting arms 222, 223 thereon. At the beginning of a forward or anticlockwise movement of the shaft 82 the pawl 216 is engaging the tooth 212 so that the forward movement causes anticlockwise movement of the cam 214. This cam movement continues until the arm 222 engages the follower 226 to lift the pawl 216. The forward movement of the shaft 82 continues for its full stroke and then the return movement takes place. During the return movement, the tooth 213 engages the pawl 217 and causes clockwise movement of the cam 214 until the pawl 217 is disengaged by a fixed stop 225, the shaft 82 continuing its return stroke at the completion of which the parts are back in their initial positions. The arrangement is such that the forward movement of the cam 214 takes place before printing is effected and the return movement takes place after printing has been completed but before the restoration of the type-wheels and setting members to their rest position begins. The cam 214 operates through the members 233, 227 to move the value-designation marking device 94 into and out of marking position. Aligning for impression.-A spring-urged locking dog 242 is provided for each type-wheel to engage a gear 74 on the wheel. Pivoted on the shaft 243 of the dogs are levers 252 carrying a rod 251 engaging a recess 247 in each of the dogs. The levers 252 are connected by a link 253 to the lever 233. Initially, the dogs are held out of engagement with the gears 74 by the rod 251, but during a printing cycle the cam 214 causes the rod to move downwardly prior to printing so as to release the dogs and then press them into engagement with the gears 74, and to move upwardly after printing, but prior to the operation of the restoring devices, to lift the dogs.
