Abstract

721,857. Statistical apparatus. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and POWERS-SAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. July 21, 1953 [Oct. 22, 1952], No. 26559/52. Class 106 (1). In order to assist starting of record-card controlled machines having a "no-card" detector at the output end, apparatus is provided to render ineffective operation of the detector device for a predetermined interval when starting the machine, and afterwards permitting the detector to become operative when the first card reaches the output end of the machine. The " no-card " detector comprises a roller 22 normally arrested by a card C, Fig. 1. During normal operation of the machine the dwell in cam 13 permits lowering of the link 15 as viewed in Fig. 1 so that should a card not be positioned between the detector roller 22 and rollers 24, spindle 19 is rocked and arm 27 moves to the right, permitting carrier 29 to be lowered until contact 31 engages 32, whereupon the solenoid 11 is de-energized and a spring 34, Fig. 4, move a trip member 8 so that it is interposed in the path of the tail 35 of the clutch pawl 6, thereby tripping the pawl 6 out of engagement with the clutch dog 3 and interrupting the operation of the main shaft. In order to prevent this sequence of events from happening for the first few cycles of the machine the delay mechanism shown in Fig. 4 is employed. This comprises a delay cam 47 freely rotatable on a shaft 45 driven by a 4 : 1 gear train 40, 41, 42, 43. The cam 47 is driven by a toothed wheel 46 fast on the shaft 45 by way of a pawl 49. The cam 47 is provided with a dwell 65 in which a pin 66 normally rests, the pin 66 is secured to a contact carrier 67 pivoted at 68 on which a tail 70 of a contact arm 38 rests permitting contacts 36, 37 to remain closed. When the trip mechanism is engaged and the cam 47 commences to rotate the contacts 36, 37 remain open for four cycles of the machine due to the 4 : 1 reduction gear train 40, 41, 42, 43. When the main switch 72 is closed, Fig. 6, current passes through line 76, contacts 74, and line 77 to solenoid 11, energizing the solenoid 11 so that the armature 10 is moved to the right, Fig. 4, withdrawing the trip member 8 from the path of the tail 35 of the clutch pawl 6 effecting rotation of driving shaft 1 and toothed wheel 46, through the 4 : 1 gearing. The movement of link 63 which is effected by the armature 10 on energization of solenoid 11 causes bell-crank 59 to be moved to the full line position, thereby raising latching piece 56 which, in turn, rocks the latching bellcrank 53 counter-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 4 so that the up-turned portion 52 is moved out of engagement with the tail 51 of pawl 49 so that it engages the teeth of wheel 46. The delay cam 47 then rotates with the wheel 46 and the pin 66 on arm 67 is raised on to the periphery of the cam 47, thus rocking arm 67 counter-clockwise and swinging contact 37 out of engagement with fixed contact 36 to open the delay switch. After the fourth cycle of the main shaft 1 the delay switch remains closed so that if thereafter the switch 31, 32 is closed due to no card being between the rollers 22, 24, at the appropriate time, the circuit to relay 73 is closed, contacts 74 are opened, contacts 75 are closed and solenoid 11 is deenergized causing trip member 8 to move beneath the tail of clutch pawl 6 to trip the clutch and stop the main shaft 1.
