Abstract

967,700. Casting-machines. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Feb. 11, 1963 [Feb. 14, 1962], No. 5415/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F1] Molten metal is intermittently pumped or metered to the shot chamber of a die-casting machine by a rotary or centrifugal pump through a valve to a delivery tube, the amount of metal delivered being controlled by opening and closing the valve, and the molten metal being recirculated when the valve is closed and while pumping the metal. By recirculated is meant that the molten metal is diverted back to the pump inlet and not to the main supply of molten metal. The pump 26 delivers to the shot chamber 17 through a valve 24 actuated by an air cylinder 23 controlled by a timer. When the valve 24 is closed, a second valve 25 is simultaneously opened and the molten metal flows through a conduit 13 to the inlet 29 of the pump. For casting magnesium and magnesium based alloys, the metal contacting surfaces may be of chrome steels, for casting aluminium &c. the surfaces may be of steel with refractory coatings such as titanium diboride and zirconium diboride. The valve heads and seats may have a " Stellite " (Registered Trade Mark) coating.
