Abstract

967,355. Casting-machines. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Feb. 12, 1963 [Feb. 14, 1962], No. 5698/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F1] Molten metal is supplied to the shot chamber of a die-casting machine by drawing it through a valve into a chamber by applying a reduced pressure to the chamber, closing the valve and delivering the metal from the chamber to a delivery tube by applying pressure to the chamber, the delivery being controlled by opening and closing a second valve communicating with the delivery tube, in such manner that both valves are not closed at the same time. The two valve heads 52, 57 are mounted on one stem 49 in an assembly 12 and actuated by an air cylinder 21 controlled through a timer. The molten metal is drawn from the supply 15 through open valve 52 into the cylinder 41 of a piston pump 10 on the downward suction stroke of the open-ended piston 27 connected to a yoke 34 driven by a reciprocating air piston 20 also controlled by a timer. On the upward stroke of the piston the valve 52 is closed, valve 57 is open and metal is forced through the delivery pipe 13, the required quantity of metal being delivered and the valve 57 being closed while the piston is still on its upward stroke. Major changes in volume to be delivered can be achieved by changing the pump, smaller changes by adjusting the stroke of the pump piston 27 as by adjusting the stroke of the actuating air piston. Delicate changes in volume can be made by adjusting the timing of the valve operation and piston speed. For casting magnesium and alloys thereof metal contacting surfaces are of chrome steel, for aluminium &c., of steel coated with refractories such titanium diboride and zirconium diboride. In a modification, Fig. 7, the molten metal is drawn into a chamber 67 by applying a vacuum thereto and expelled by applying a pressurized inert gas such as argon, a contact 70 causing the valves to be actuated when the metal in the chamber reaches a predetermined level.
