Abstract
1418262 Continuous casting URALSKY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI S M KIROVA 21 Jan 1974 02827/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] A mould 4 is cooled by coolant, e.g. Na-K eutectic, passed to and from mould manifolds 3, 7 from a first vessel 1 with a (water) cooler 9 or from a second vessel 10 with a heater 12, the coolant being delivered by a pump 6 in a first pipe-line 5 and returned through a second pipeline 8, there being valves 15, 18 for selectively opening communication between the vessels 1, 10 and the mould and a coolant reservoir 23. The apparatus is first filled with inert gas from a reservoir 26 through a connection 25 to either vessel 1, 10. Then the vessels are filled by means of an auxiliary pump 21 (an induction pump like pump 6 for the eutectic alloy) which is primed from the reservoir 23 by use of a vacuum pipe 32. The pump 6 fills the mould passages. The casting is withdrawn intermittently from the mould 4 which is fed with the coolant from the low temperature vessel 1 and the high temperature vessel 10 in succession. The high temperature coolant 11 may be cooled by passing coolant 2 from the vessel 1 by way of the pump 21 to the vessel 10 at a level below the vessel outlet to the mould. Surplus coolant from vessel 10 overflows into the vessel 1 through a passage 19. The vessels 1, 10 may be compartments of a single chamber.
