Abstract

An electrically conductive flexible sheet material is made of fibres of one or more vitreous and/or synthetic resin materials, held together by a bonding resin to form a non-woven fabric and is rendered electrically conductive by the presence of metallic powder or finely divided carbon particles incorporated therein. The fibres may be of polyethylene terephthalate, a polyamide resin or glass and for bonding, acrylic, epoxide or polyester resins may be used. The fabric may be manufactured by making a stock of short staple fibres of one or more vitreous and/or synthetic resin materials and carbon in the form of particles of colloidal dimensions in a liquid bonding resin in active form or in a solution of a bonding resin in a volatile solvent and processing this stock on a paper-making machine of the drum type. The fabric so formed may be calendered and cut into strips for application to an electric cable. It may also be made by preparing the non-woven fabric from stock not containing the bonding resin and carbon and subsequently impregnating this fabric with a suspension of carbon in a liquid resin.
