Abstract

1,169,691. Mica coatings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 20 Oct., 1966 [22 July, 1965], No. 31335/65. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B5, H1 and H2] Mica tape or sheet for use as electrical insulation is impregnated with a heat-curable synthetic resin substance which comprises a mixture of bisphenol A epoxy resin and one or more cycloaliphatic resins. There may be between 50 and 70% by wt. of bisphenol A epoxy resin in the mixture. The mica tape or sheet is prepared by bonding one or more layers of individual mica flakes or sheets of mica paper to a backing material e.g. one or more layers of glass cloth, silk, synthetic fabrics or mixtures of such materials, with a bonding agent which may be bisphenol A epoxy resin, or an epoxy phenolic resin as disclosed in Specification 1169692 and to which a final layer of glass cloth may be applied. Electrical apparatus having insulation including the mica tape or sheet may be formed by placing mica tape or sheet in contact with an electrically conducting part e.g. conductor, commutator or transformer part, impregnating the mica tape or sheet with a mixture of liquid bisphenol A epoxy resin and one or more cycloaliphatic resins and a curing agent e.g. hexahydrophthalic anhydride, and heating to cure the impregnating resin. There may be between 100 and 115 parts by weight of the curing agent to every 100 parts by weight of the mixture of liquid bisphenol A and one or more cycloaliphatic resins. Alternatively, the mica tape or sheet may be impregnated with the impregnating resin before it is applied to the conductor.
