A stocking is knitted on a straight-bar or circular knitting-machine and comprises a turned welt formed by commencing knitting with a substantially inextensible yarn, then knitting a band of fabric 2<SP>1</SP> from a stretch yarn, next knitting up to and beyond a fold line 1a a band of fabric 1b<SP>1</SP>, 1b to form a marginal edge, which band in at least the region of the fold line is of openwork fabric and then knitting a second band of fabric 2 from the stretch yarn before knitting further fabric from the inextensible yarn for the main portion of the stocking. The yarn for the marginal edge 1b<SP>1</SP>, 1b is substantially inextensible and has been either predyed or is to be cross dyed to be distinct in respect of colour from the yarns for the main portion and bands 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. The openwork effect may be produced by repeat operations of the picot points in the case of a straight-bar machine or by tacking in the case of a circular machine.
