[Also in Group VII] The main yarn forming the upper end (e.g. the welt) of a ladies' fully-fashioned stocking is reinforced in one or more suspender-attachment bands at a location or locations appropriate to the attachment of the suspender, by knitting an additional yarn with the main yarn at spaced courses, e.g. at every third course. The reinforced area may be a panel or panels which may, as at 17, Fig. 1, stretch from the picot edge 11 to the welt bottom 12 and be formed in one or both plies, or may, as at 20, Fig. 2, be spaced therefrom ; or it may be a similarly spaced circumferential band 31, Fig. 3, In the constructions of Figs. 2 and 3, the reinforced part is contracted somewhat, to produce a frilled effect at 21 and 22, or 34 and 35, by using as the reinforcing yarn a stretch yarn fed in extended condition or a relatively inextensible yarn fed in a relatively high tension; and the inner ply of the turned welt has a reinforced area coincident with that of the outer ply. Friction may be provided by use of, say, cotton or bulked synthetic yarn as the reinforcing yarn; and that yarn may contrast in appearance (e.g. in colour or shade) with the main yarn, to render the area readily visible. An after-welt 14 incorporating picot stitches 15, or an after-welt 25 incorporating a single row of picot stitches 29, may be provided.
